Rogue Traders

Dear Resident,

We are writing to raise awareness about rogue traders who may be operating in our community.

These individuals often call unexpectedly at homes, offering services such as gardening, driveway cleaning, roofing, or building work.

While some doorstep callers are genuine, others may be dishonest and try to pressure you into paying for unnecessary, poor quality, or overpriced work.

How to protect yourself:

  • Be cautious of cold callers – if you are not expecting someone, you don’t have to open the door.
  • Never agree to work on the spot – take time to seek quotes from reputable local companies.
  • Ask for identification – genuine traders or officials will be happy to show it.
  • Don’t hand over cash to doorstep callers or allow them to take you to a cash machine.
  • If in doubt, keep them out – it’s your home, and you have every right to say no.
  •

    If you are approached:

  • Politely decline and close the door.
  • Report suspicious activity to Northamptonshire Police on 101 (or 999 in an emergency).
  •

If you feel pressured or threatened, call us immediately.

You can also contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 for further advice.

Together, we can protect our community from rogue traders. Please share this advice with friends, family, and neighbours – especially those who may be more vulnerable.

Thank you for your support in helping keep Northamptonshire safe.

    Stay Safe
